Pazhassi Raja Tomb is built in memory of king Veera Pazhassi Raja. He was a warrior prince from the kingdom of Kottayam who earned himself the name Kerala Simham (King of Kerala).

Pazhassi Raja was known for his bravery and rebellion against the British. And this memorial tomb is constructed at the spot where he was cremated. A museum nearby showcases the prized possessions of the king. It also provides a glimpse of the local heritage and culture.

Pazhassi Raja Museum and Tomb has become one of the most popular centers of attraction for history lovers in Wayanad. It’s located close to Mananthavady town, amidst a lush garden. Paved pathways and flowery bushes have also been laid in the garden.

History of Pazhassi Raja Tomb

Pazhassi Raja was among the few leaders in India to revolt against the increasing power of the East India Company in the south. Around 1800 CE, he organised guerrilla warfare against the British and kept their expansion in check.

In 1805, the British captured him from Pulpally Cave nearby and shot him dead. Pazhassi Raja Tomb Wayanad marks the point where he was cremated.

Later, in 1996, Kerala State Archaeology Department converted the place into a museum. And it attracts historians, researchers and students from many places.
