Thoovanam Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Kerala. It is located within Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, near Marayoor. It is a wonderful place for trekkers and others who love nature.

Marayoor Thoovanam Falls is formed by the Pambar River, and apart from trekking, you can enjoy a soothing experience of swimming too.

Things to do at Thoovanam Falls

1. Trekking towards the waterfalls – Thoovanam Falls trekking is a guided tour of around 3 hours. The 4 km long trail to the waterfalls begins at Alampetty check post. During the trek, you get to enjoy the serene environment of the forest and witness the animals and birds there. Watch out for the giant grizzled squirrel, a rare variety Chinnar is known for.

2. Nature walk in the wild – Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is the home to dense sandalwood forests. And you’ll find many fragrant sandalwood trees near Thoovanam Waterfalls. Also, the river is one of the major sources of drinking water for wild animals. You’ll come across langurs, elephants, and other animals while you roam around the waters.

3. Swimming in Pambar River – Thoovanam Falls emerges from the Pambar River, and if you visit it in the monsoon, you’ll find it rumbling down the slope. This cascading waterfall, therefore, offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a dip in the cold and crystal-clear water of the river. But be cautious while you're in the strong current.

4. Clicking photographs of the landscape – The waterfall cascades upon the rocks throughout the year, and photographers visit the place to get exceptional photos. The waterfall, green forests and the herds of animals around provide plenty of avenues for glamorous clicks.

5. Staying at the log house – You can spend a night among the wildlife of Chinnar. You can enjoy camping or set yourself in a comfortable log house on the banks, cottage, or forest guesthouse.

Thoovanam Falls Entry Fee and Timings

To visit Thoovanam Falls Munnar, opt for the guided trek of Chinnar sanctuary. The 3 hours trek starts at Alampetty check post and costs ₹200 per person for Indians. If you're visiting from abroad, the price is ₹300 per person. The guide will walk you through the trail, keep you safe from dangers and provide information about the flora and fauna around.

The treks are scheduled between 7 AM and 10 AM, and then, again at 3 PM, until 6 PM. You can buy tickets at the check post. It is open on all days.

Best Time to visit Thoovanam Falls

Although the waterfall burbles throughout the year, the monsoon months (around July-August) offer the best experience. The surroundings look beautiful during that time. The muddy trail and intermittent rains, however, might disturb your plans.

You can also visit the place from November to May. Those are the winter and spring months, and Thoovanam Falls weather remains pleasant enough for you to explore.

1. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – The area around Thoovanam Falls is a part of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the home to the endangered giant grizzled squirrel species. The combination of forests and grasslands promotes varied wildlife, and the environment makes it an ideal spot for trekking. You can find herds of gaur, elephant, and deer among others during your trek or safari.

2. Lakkam Waterfalls – About 20 km away from Thoovanam Falls, Lakkam Waterfalls originates in Eravikulam National Park. The area is surrounded by trees and the scenery makes it a popular spot among the hikers and photography lovers. The crystal-clear water rolls down the boulders to collect into a pool, which joins River Pambar later.

3. Eravikulam National Park – Eravikulam National Park is home to a diverse range of amphibians, birds, and animals including the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. The ecosystem of the park consists of high-altitude grasslands, Shola forests and several water streams and pools. It is about 36 km away from Thoovanam Falls, and it is a favourite among the tourists.

4. Anamudi Peak – Anamudi Peak is situated within Eravikulam National Park, and it is the highest peak in southern India. It is 2,695 m high and offers a bird’s-eye view of the evergreen bamboo forests and teak trees in the surrounding valley. On your trip, you will also see the tea plantations, spice plantations and the wildlife of the area.

5. Floriculture Centre – Against the backdrop of tea plantations, KFDC Floriculture Centre features a large variety of flowers and herbs. It has hundreds of rare flower varieties along with other herbs, shrubs, and creepers. The park is maintained by the Kerala Forest Development Corporation and it is a must-visit tourist spot. It is 4 km away from Thoovanam Falls.

How to reach Thoovanam Falls Munnar?

This mesmerising tourist spot is situated within Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is about 50 km away from Munnar. You can take a bus or hire a cab from top car rental companies in Munnar to reach Alampetty check post. From there, you will trek along with a guide on a 4 km long trail to Thoovanam Falls.

Now, here are the various ways to reach Munnar –

By Road – Munnar is connected to the neighbouring towns and major cities by road. Daily buses run for Munnar from Coimbatore (150 km), Kochi (120 km), Madurai (170 km) and other nearby towns. Thoovanam Waterfalls is about 50 km from Munnar bus stop. Cabs, too, are available for hire to take you to Munnar and the waterfall.

By Rail – Munnar doesn’t have a dedicated railway station. The nearest one is at Aluva, about 120 km away. And from there, frequent buses or cabs are available for Munnar. Aluva is connected well to nearby areas with regular trains. Other railway stations like Coimbatore (150 km), Ernakulam (120 km), and Madurai (170 km) have more trains from other parts of the country.

By Air – If you want to fly into Munnar, Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport. It is about 120 km away. Daily flights from various airports in the country and abroad land there. You can also take one of the flights to Coimbatore or Madurai airport. From there, you can book a private cab for your Munnar tour, or get on a bus.
